Astrology is the study of the movements and positions of the sun, moon, planets, and stars in the belief that they affect the character and lives of people. Also, different sections of society believe in different astrological concepts. Indian astrology is known as Vedic astrology or ‘Jyotisha’. The Indian astrology gives importance to the 9 planetary deities or ‘Navagraha’. Astrology is simply a way of seeing the world and positioning ourselves within a larger cosmic conversation. Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn have the special angle of aspect, besides being in direct opposition. Karmkand
‘Ritualism or karmakand,’ is a practice, the practice of communion with the Divine, the practice of our Upanishadic philosophy, and the tenets of Vedanta through the actions of our body, speech and mind. Religion pervades many aspects of Hindu life, and religious observance is not limited to one location, time of day, or use of a particular text. It assumes many forms: in the home, at the temple, on a pilgrimage, through yogic practices, dance or music, at the roadside, by the river, through the observation of one’s social duties and so on. Vedic astrologers use charts and planetary positions to make predictions; they use their powers of meditation and intuition to perceive certain patterns and trends and forces that act upon an individual based on their karma, as reflected in their birth chart, and intuit how they interact with forces operating in the larger cosmos at the current time. It is about probabilities and trends and currents that pull our lives and psyches in certain ways—it is not about fatalistic proclamations or specific predictions of what will happen when. All of our Vedangas recognize the supremacy of purushartha (individual effort through the exercise of free will) to counteract what is written in our stars, for better or worse. What is written in our stars is the recording of the karmic fruits of our own actions and exercise of free will in the past, which are then divined through astrology and other such practices. Practices vary depending on location, but generally speaking, the worshiper might approach the temple to give thanks, to ask for assistance, to give penance, or to contemplate the divine. Worship is tied to the individual or family group, rather than a service or congregational gathering. Puja occurs on a daily basis, or even several times throughout the day, as well as at specific times and days at local temples, and with abundant festivities on the occasions of great festivals.
